The FIR 5K sponsored by Spectrum Health is a 5K walk.run to benefit the Berkshire Running Foundation's FIR (Fitness In Recovery) program.  Spectrum Health staff and clients have worked towards helping create this program offering a free, safe, sober and supportive enviroment for anyone who would like to introduce fitness into their lives.  A proven benefit to helping anyoneto  deal with the issues surrounding any type of recovery; whether it be from substance abuse, anxiety, depression, grief, food issues or perhaps you are the caregiver to someone in recovery. Fitness is a wonderful addition to any program.

The Berkshire Running Foundation is excited and ready to launch the Fitness In Recovery (FIR) program as the next extension of its ongoing work. Working with the local hospital, rehabilitation center and local community centers, Berkshire Running Foundation will be offering a health and fitness program for those in recovery, as well as for their supporters and families. Using the proven Lemme Run Program, participants will be led thru a six-week program with the goal to complete a 5K run. Each participant will have an experienced coach to help guide them throughout their training. After completing the program, clients are encouraged to stay on and train to become a coach themselves. The FIR program structure is a proven and successful template that has been developed around the world. Implementing exercise, in addition to a recovery program, has a profound impact on each participant in physical improvement, social engagement and the success of their recovery.
